Community Showcase: local community funding and engagement To receive an update from local community groups on the work they do and how residents can get involved. To include updates from:
· St Helier Community Voices Choir · People Arise Now and Police football project
To include a summary of local projects and events that have received funding from the local committee (previously known as 'neighbourhood grants') Supporting documents: Minutes: The Community Engagement Manager introduced the St Helier Community Voices Choir.
The group outlined how the choir supported good mental and physical health through singing, the group welcomed anyone to join, with the view that anyone can sing in a choir. It was explained that new members were welcome, the group meet on Tuesday evenings at St Peter’s Church, Bishopsford Road, Carshalton.
The Community Engagement Manager introduced the People Arise Now and Police Football project.
Members of the People Arise Now and Police Football project provided background about the project’s work, aims and projects the group had run. The group explained they aimed to work to find solutions to support improving relationships between the police and young people. As a part of the project a community football tournament is being held on Monday 21 August 2023 at 2pm-4pm at the Sutton Sports Village, Rosehill, Sutton, The group welcomed teams to take part and added that further information was available on the website youth@peoplearisenow.org
The group explained that they were looking to expand their work, and engage with young people through other interests such as music and fashion. The group confirmed they would be developing a report outlining outcomes of their projects.
The Community Engagement Manager introduced the Pastor of Horizon Church who explained the community work and community groups run by the church. Residents of the area were welcomed to join groups.
The Community Engagement Officer provided a summary of local projects and events that had received funding from the local committee (previously known as 'neighbourhood grants') and information about ongoing engagement activity on council services. Attention was drawn that the next funding window would run from 1 September 2023 - 6 October 2023 and that applications could be made via the form on the Council’s website, if further assistance was needed in making an application residents could contact neighbourhoodgrants@sutton.gov.uk, groups were encouraged to apply. |

Health Update An update from a health representative from the local primary care network (PCN), around health inequalities and plans to address this locally. Minutes: Nadine Wyatt, India Multani, Jonathan Cockbain and Jubee Mathews from the Local Primary Care Trust provided a presentation, and attendees discussed health care issues in groups, feedback included:
· Communications, how do people become aware of activities and groups available to support loneliness, disabled residents and the elderly. · Services should engage with men · There needed to be activities for working people · There needed to be an understanding of gaps in service provision · Health professionals needed to speak to residents to understand concerns |

Public questions This item is an opportunity for members of the public to raise questions about local issues. Questions must be submitted using the form available on the council’s website. Questions can be submitted from the day the meeting agenda is published (ordinarily ten days before the meeting) until 10:00am on the fifth working day before the meeting. Where possible, written responses will be provided before the meeting.
The Chair has also allocated time during the meeting to hear supplementary questions. Your question will be published, along with your name and any organisation you are representing (if applicable) and will also be included in the minutes of the meeting. Supporting documents: Minutes: Question 1, Susan Peters had received a written response to a question on the topic of funding for a noticeboard at the Circle.
Miss Peters suggested that a noticeboard in this location could be used to provide residents information about community groups and events.
The Community Engagement Manager welcomed applications to the local projects and events fund and confirmed that the window for applications for Local Funding opened 1 September, and that support in making applications was available from ward councillors or neighbourhoodgrants@sutton.gov.uk.
Question 2, Marcus Howarth had received a written response to a question on the topic of rails on the pavement at Budge Lane and did not attend the meeting.
In response to questions from attendees of the meeting officers explained that monies available for Local Funding in this Local Committee area were allocated annually, that there were two windows per year for applications, and groups could be supported to make applications by their ward councillor or neighbourhoodgrants@sutton.gov.uk.
Residents suggested a central website location where information about community groups, activities and Local Committee meetings would be useful and would help residents find information. Attendees suggested that information could also be spread by word of mouth, and by email if those aware of events shared information with their contacts and asked that those contacts share the information onwards in the community. |
