Meeting: 16/03/2010 - St. Helier, The Wrythe and Wandle Valley Local Committee (Item 261)

safer neighbourhood teams - update

The Safer Neighbourhood Team will attend to give a verbal update on the priorities for the three wards in this area.

Indicative time 15 minutes

Minutes:

Sergeants Tom O’Donoghue and Dave Glennon attended to give updates from the St Helier and Wandle Valley Safer Neighbourhood Teams (SNT).

Sgt Glennon reported that the priorities for the St Helier SNT were:

  • Anti social behaviour by youths in the Rosehill area,
  • motor vehicle crime (which was a borough-wide problem), and
  • anti social behaviour with drugs at Rosehill.

These priorities were to be reviewed in May.

Sgt O’Donoghue reported that the priorities for Wandle Valley SNT were:

  • Anti social behaviour in Mill Green area,
  • motor vehicle crime, and
  • anti social behaviour of drivers in the congestion around Hackbridge.

The next Ward Panel meeting was to be held in April.

Apologies were given that there was no report, due to the sergeant being sick, from The Wrythe SNT.

In response to questions Sgt O’Donoghue reported that:

  • There were two speed guns available for the whole borough.
  • That there was training issues in the use of the speed guns due to changes of equipment.
  • Traffic Control had been asked to look at the traffic at Hackbridge Bridge in the next couple of weeks for a few weeks.
  • There were by laws for open spaces in respect of dogs off leads and that the SNT do request for dogs to be on leads when on the roads.  However, the whole issue was being looked at in terms of legislation and who does what.  When this work is done it will be communicated to all so that people are aware.  Residents were requested to always call the police if they were concerned about dogs off leads and that if they thought the dog was dangerous they should dial 999 for urgent attention.

Jean Crossby stated that it was refreshing not to be talking about fly-tipping or graffiti and that the SNT had done a great job in alleviating these problems and was sure they would deal with the dog issue in the same manner.

Councillor Sue Stears reported a problem at the BP garage and Marks and Spencers at Wrythe Green with regard to the layout of the store.  There were too many food thefts which meant that they took up a large amount of police time.

Resolved: (i) To request a written brief from wards not covered by a sergeant at the meeting.

(ii) To thank Sergeants Tom O’Donoghue and Dave Glennon for attending.
